Getting set up

Capacity online in four steps

A storage server is provisioned the same way as any other VPS — automatically, with root access.

  1. 1

    Size your storage

Work out how much space you need today and pick the tier that leaves some headroom for growth.

  2. 2

    Choose your OS

Install a clean Linux distribution and configure the filesystem the way your workflow expects.

  3. 3

    Connect it

Mount it over SFTP, rsync, NFS or SMB, or point your backup software straight at it.

  4. 4

    Automate it

Schedule your syncs with cron and let the archive maintain itself from then on.

What makes it different

Optimised for capacity, priced accordingly

A storage VPS trades raw CPU for a great deal more disk. That trade is the whole point.

Capacity

Terabytes of space at a fraction of NVMe pricing

Fast NVMe is the right choice for a database, and an expensive one for an archive that is written once and read rarely. Storage plans use high-capacity drives instead, which is why you can buy far more space for the same money.

  • High-capacity drives rather than small fast ones
  • Sized for archives, backups and media libraries
  • Room to grow without repeated migrations

Access

Root access and any protocol you like

This is a real server, not a locked-down object store with its own API to learn. Mount it over SFTP, rsync, NFS or SMB, run Nextcloud or Restic on it, or point an existing backup tool straight at it. Nothing is proprietary, so nothing traps your data.

  • Full root access over SSH
  • SFTP, rsync, NFS and SMB all supported
  • Runs Nextcloud, Restic, Duplicati or your own scripts

Predictable cost

A flat monthly price, not a metered bill

Object storage tends to charge separately for requests and for every gigabyte pulled back out, which makes a restore unexpectedly expensive at the worst possible moment. A storage VPS costs the same each month whether you read from it once or continuously.

  • One flat monthly price
  • No per-request or egress surprises
  • 30-day money-back guarantee

What it is for

When capacity matters more than clock speed

These are the jobs a storage server does better and cheaper than a standard VPS.

Offsite backups

A second copy of your servers, kept somewhere the original hardware cannot take it down with it.

Long-term archives

Records you must retain but rarely open. Paying NVMe prices for them makes no sense.

Media libraries

Raw footage, photography and audio masters that outgrow a laptop within a single project.

Private file sync

Self-host Nextcloud or similar and keep team files on infrastructure you control.

Seedboxes and mirrors

Bandwidth-heavy transfers that would exhaust a shared hosting fair-use policy in a day.

Build and CI artefacts

Container images and build outputs that accumulate quickly and are read only occasionally.

Storage VPS FAQ

Questions before you order

What customers ask us most about high-capacity storage servers.

The balance of resources is different. A Cloud VPS gives you more CPU and fast NVMe storage for running applications; a Storage VPS gives you far more disk space on high-capacity drives for a lower price per gigabyte. Choose on the basis of whether your bottleneck is processing or space.

Technically yes, since you have root and a full Linux install. In practice it is the wrong tool — the CPU allocation is modest by design. Use a Cloud VPS for the site and a Storage VPS for its backups.

However you prefer. rsync and SFTP are the most common, and you can also set up NFS or SMB, or point an existing backup tool such as Restic, Duplicati or Veeam at the server directly.

No, and this is important: a storage server is where you keep backups, not a backup service in itself. You control what is stored and how it is replicated. If the data is irreplaceable, keep a second copy elsewhere as well.

Each plan includes a monthly bandwidth allowance, listed with the plan. Ordinary backup and sync patterns sit comfortably inside it; if you expect sustained heavy transfer, tell us the volume and we will confirm the right tier before you order.

Yes, and we would encourage it. Because you have root, you can encrypt at the filesystem level or, better still, encrypt client-side before upload so the data is unreadable even to us.

You can move to a larger plan. Contact support and we will arrange the migration so the transfer happens in a scheduled window rather than interrupting an active sync.
